Seydisfjordur

Few places in Iceland past can boast such a well-preserved collection of old timber buildings as Seydisfjordur.

In the late 19th century new construction techniques were being developed in Norway, and sawmills began to manufacture houses in kit form, for export. Businessmen in Seydisfjordur who had strong ties to Norway seized the opportunity, constructing splendid, high-quality buildings – homes, shops and public buildings – in the town in the period 1895-1922. Many of these buildings are still extant, preserving the atmosphere of Seydisfjordur in the early 20th century.
