Tarutao was a prison during 1937 - 1946 and this is where they were confined if they misbehaved. Imagine the heat during the day.
At one point there were 3000 prisoners on the island and no less than 120 lived in each such house.
During 1 941-1943 the prisoners were close to starving hence they were weaker and one year about 700 people died from Malaria.
We walked off the paved path and paid dearly. The cute little "worms" that Kári and I admired turned out to be Leaches and these paths are crawling with them.
Kári got off easy compared to me, who wore long running pants. One little sucker traveled from my heal to my waist and stopped three times for a delicious drink.
One Leach danced and mesmerized Kári while his friends got comfortable and settle for a much longed for drink - Kári and I have never seen these creatures before, apart from stuck on other peoples legs and in the movies.
Tarutao is really beautiful and I sincerely hope to get the opportunity to visit again. There are so many things to see and the creatures there are plentiful and very interesting.
