Statue of Ingólfur Arnarson, first settler in Iceland.

The Seal of Reykjavík

The story behind The Seal of Reykjavík

Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler in Reykjavík,
threw his High-seat pillars overboard en route to Iceland
and decided to settle where the gods brought them ashore.
This happened to be in Reykjavík, and his slaves,
which searched for the pillars,
were astonished at his decision to settle in the lava grounds in Reykjavík,
after having seen the lush fields of the southern part of Iceland.

The Seal of Reykjavík shows
the High-seat pillars with stylized waves in the background.
Artist Halldór Pétursson,
one of Iceland's greatest caricaturists and illustrators.
