Húsavíkurkirkja

Locator

Husavik Church

Húsavíkurkirkja, Husavik Church, is built like a cross,
and the belfry and entrance are in one corner,
not in the middle as is usually the case.
A very beautiful building erected 1906-1907, and the
architect was Rögnvaldur Ólafsson.

Húsavík is the oldest exctant place name
in Iceland. The first man to stay there was the Swede
Garðar Svavarsson, who called Iceland Garðarshólmi, Gardars Islet.
Húsavík, House Inlet, is supposedly named
after the houses Garðar built there.

The stamp was issued in 1978 with a face value of 120 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Printed in Heliogravure by Courvoisier.
