Súlur

Locator

Sulur

Súlur, Pillars, is between Stöðvarfjörður and Breiðdalsvík
in the Eastern Fjords. Súlur is 543 meters (1800 feet) in height.
The slopes of the mountains are steep, and until 1960
the only road was a dizzying narrow path along the slopes.

The first settler in Stöðvarfjörður was
Þórhallur the Old, a heathen priest from Mæri in Norway.
Before leaving for Iceland, he had his
hof (heathen place of worship)
dismantled and transported the Pillars
from the hof and the earth that they had stood in to Iceland.
When he came to Stöðvarfjörður, he re-built the hof
and hallowed the fjord.

The stamp was issued in 1983 with a face value of 4.50 krónur.
Artist: Þröstur Magnússon
Printed in Heliogravure by Courvoisier.
