New Year's and Christmas Celebrations in Iceland

The ships in the harbor are decorated with lights to celebrate the Christmas season.

Decorations appear on crosses and headstones in the cemetery, and many are decorated with lights as well. Christmas is a time of remembrance for many Icelanders.
The school in my parent's hometown. These wonderful pictures are the handiwork of the school's students. They are made from brown wrapping paper and silk paper. Some new pictures are made every year, with old favorites being repaired and renewed.
One year we put an old fishing boat on the bonfire. Here the fire is just starting to burn the salt-soaked wood.
The bonfire is an excellent occasion to take some really weird pictures...
The fire casts an eerie glow on the dancing elves. Every year at some of the bigger bonfires, there will be a troupe of dancers dressed as elves and trolls. Led by their king and queen, they dance Icelandic folk dances and lead the spectators in song.
Some places will have a band playing as well.
The kids enjoy themselves immensely, especially when they are allowed to play with sparklers.
The bonfire in full blaze.
Once midnight comes around, the fireworks start.

A montage of exploding fireworks.
