For new readers
Agatha
Christie wrote quite a few great books, but naturally some are better than
others. If you haven't read any of her books but would like to, here is a
suggestion of which books to read first:
1.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles
It's probably best to start with Christie's first book, where
she introduces Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings. If you really like
that book and feel you would like to read a lot of other Christie books,
it could be a good idea to continue reading the books in the order of
publication, but not start with all the best books (which are included in
this 5 book list).
2.
And then There Were None
One of Agatha Christie's best books - a classic. (Also known as
Ten Little Indians / Ten Little Niggers.)
3.
Murder on the Orient Express
Made famous by the
film, but the book is great and the ending very surprising. Featuring
Poirot.
4.
Murder on the Links
A very entertaining Poirot story, also featuring Hastings.
5.
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
A Hercule Poirot mystery - Christie's best book and her most
famous one. Nevertheless it's best not to read that one first because such
a great book deserves readers who have read a few Christie books before,
so they can truly appreciate it.
If you want
to get to know other Christie characters you can read The Secret
Adversary (the first Tommy & Tuppence book) or The Murder at
the Vicarage (the first Miss Marple book).
October 2000.
