Water sounds: creeks, rivers, lakes and sea

Strengur includes twelve songs for double-bass, percussion, water sounds and videos. Einarsson recorded different water sounds in the Icelandic countryside where his ancestors lived and these sounds mix with the percussion and the double-bass which here is the leading voice. On the DVD one can listen to the music and follow the movements of the water in 12 different videos. Strengur was performed for the first time at the Reykjavik Arts Festival 2011.

“The Icelandic word “strengur” usually refers to a string in an instrument. There are four “strengir” (strings) in a double-bass. But “strengur” can also mean a strong current in creeks and rivers and there is a “strengur” between me and my forefathers. All these “strengir” can be found in the STRENGUR project.”
From Einarsson´s liner notes

Early Latin is a compilation of Einarsson´s Latin tunes from 1985 to 2000. It includes his homage to Antonio Carlos Jobim, titled Jobim, as well as the sambas Managua and Freestyle Samba, which became a hit in Iceland in 1987. Seven tunes out of nine are instrumental, but two tracks include vocals: Títómas and Heart, both recorded in 2005. Heart is a classic bolero (here also included in the original instrumental version), superbly performed by the female vocalist Kristjana Stefánsdóttir, and Títómas (dedicated to Tito Puente as well as the composer) is a vocal duo of her and Þorvaldur Þorvaldsson. This is the fourth version of Títómas; it was originally released on Kúbanska (2002) and on LIVE! (2009) are two versions of the tune, the first one recorded in Reykjavik and the second at Le Club in Moscow. Among the musicians on Early Latin are the Danish trumpet virtuoso Jens Winther (1960-2010), as well as the versatile pianist/keyboardist Eythor Gunnarsson, best known for his work with the fusion group Mezzoforte and a composer of their greatest hit, Garden Party.

"Landsýn is the Icelandic word for landfall, the first bit of land seen after a voyage at sea.
On this CD bassist/composer Tómas R. Einarsson looks at his country through music and poetry.
He has arranged four Icelandic hymns from the 17th century, but other compositions are his own.
He has set to music a varied selection of poems from this century; the oldest one is the surrealistic S.S. Montclare, written by Nobelprize winner Halldór Laxness in 1927, and the youngest one, Þú ert (You are),
is a humorous description of the Icelandic language by the visual artist/sculptor Sigurður Guðmundsson"
(from the sleeve notes)

"The music on Tómas R. Einarsson´s Landsýn (Jazzís 102) is full of invention and humor."

Journey to Iceland gets its name from a poem by W.H Auden, which appeared in the famous travel book he wrote with Louis McNeice, Letters from Iceland. In this poem Auden gives up his hopes of Iceland as an isolated society, unaffected by the evils of modern times - and admits, not completely unhappy: "Let jazz be bestowed on the huts." American trombonist/vocalist Frank Lacy sings the two compositions Einarsson wrote to the poem.

"What are you waiting for? Get this CD."

"Bassist Einarsson is a competent soloist and accompanist as well as a versatile composer. His compositions embrace a number of stylistic orientations, centering primarily on neobop and the more pensive strains of Eicheresque Eurojazz."
